Abstract

The affirmation of the interculturalism and the politics of recognition of culturally diverse identities are an important factor for creating stable democratic and civic values of the contemporary multicultural societies. As a precondition of these processes, the intercultural sensibility is an important value which could be articulated through various institutions, of which the most important one is the education (institutional and noninstitutional) as a powerful instrument of emancipation, social perception and socialization. This paper deals with basic preconditions and problems of achieving the intercultural education/learning and the affirmation of cultural difference policy through the educational processes in the conditions of the contemporary society.

In the second part, the paper shows the results of the empirical research into the intercultural sensitivity of the student population from the University of Niš, done as a part of the wider project by the Center for sociological research of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš. Through several analytical phases, the research initially established the subjective evaluation of the students in connection with how much is the current education system in Serbia interculturally sensitive (how much it allows students’ critical thinking, developing skills for the tolerance and the non-violent treatment of others). Then the study determined the possible presence of the ethnic distance among students (the acceptance/rejection of the joint study with members of other cultural, ethnic communities, as well as their (non)acceptance as teachers and assistants). A survey was conducted with a sample of 818 students from six faculties of the University of Niš, during the academic year of 2012/13, The survey used a questionnaire as an instrument of the empirical research with theoretical analytic review of Milton Bennett's qualitative model of the development stage of the intercultural sensitivity.
